Things are Hotting Up! – Red Packaging

Every year, fashion houses and paint companies determine the colours of the season or year. Once declared, many brands follow suit, producing clothing, interior furnishings, packaging and more in the tones that are in favour. So, what can we expect in 2023?

Colours of the Year 2023

At the start of the year, the Pantone Colour Institute presented Viva Magenta as the colour of the year. This rich shade edges into the purple side of the red spectrum and is described as joyous and powerful.

After years of grey tones being favoured on interior walls, Dulux has named Wild Wonder™ its colour of the year. This light golden hue is described as glowing and positive. It’s inspired by nature and brings a warm, cosy feeling to a room.

Fashion predictions for 2023 suggest that new items for our wardrobes may also be heating up. Vogue highlighted catwalk shows that have embraced what they describe as the Magentaverse. Other prominent colours included fiery red-orange, saffron yellow, peach pink and beetroot purple. Wearing clothes in this bold colour is said to mark a point of change; a time when people want to feel empowered.

Is Red a Good Colour for Packaging?

Red is a strong confident colour, which is used in the packaging of many global brands. It is eye-catching and generates an emotive response. It’s the dominant colour for expressing love – just think back to Valentine’s Day packaging! It is also widely used in food packaging, as it stimulates appetite.

An energetic colour, representing strength and power, red packaging is popular a choice for sports equipment and trainers. In ‘Studies in Scarlet’ researchers found that wearing red even enhanced athletic performance and interview success! Red is also a warning; it signifies danger and this means it is used to package potentially hazardous products, including medicines.

The brightest shades and exact tonal matches are best achieved when printing onto a white base. If you prefer to tone down the vibrancy of red, you might print the colour onto brown cardboard or include a darker tone in your print design to neutralise the intensity of colour.

Examples of Red Packaging

A strong red print is requested by many of our packaging customers. These include Bonnie & Pop, shown in the accompanying image. This box arriving at your doorstep would fill you with delight, even before you discover the treats held inside!

Another example of red food packaging is Not Just Nibbles. Discover more about this children’s cooking subscription box; enough to get your tastebuds excited! Our recent order of shipping boxes for laboratory products featured single-colour red branding and the red print on these cake boxes communicates an important handling message.
