UK Beers, Wines & Drinks Packaging

June is the month of National Beer Day and English Wine Week; an opportunity to celebrate the brewers and fermenters on our doorstep. So, what do we need to know about local producers, drinks packaging and doorstep delivery of your favourite tipple?

Cheers To Beer

Britain’s Beer Day is held on 15 June and it encourages drinkers to seek out independent, local breweries to experience unique flavour profiles. The majority of the 1824 UK breweries that were trading in Q1 2023 are small. Therefore, they don’t produce on the scale demanded by supermarkets or pub and restaurant chains. Instead, they open their doors to the public with tours and tasting events, as well as having on-site shops or selling online.

The brands may not be familiar, however, there are many advantages to buying from microbreweries. Firstly, they are more likely to use traditional and natural ingredients. Secondly, they like to experiment, which leads to new temptations for your tastebuds. Thirdly, buying from small companies is beneficial for the local economy.

“Small breweries have a hugely positive impact on their local community, providing jobs, raising money for charity, supporting local initiatives, and providing access to the freshly-brewed local beers that are now in such demand across the UK. All small independent breweries deserve your support.” Andy Slee, SIBA Chief Executive.

Our nearest is Chiltern Brewery, which has been in operation for over four decades, where is yours?

Then there is the convenience of doorstep deliveries, as many small breweries take online orders. An example is the Cronx Brewery Selection Box, which enables you to try four of their most popular beers. This includes Entire, which was awarded Bronze for Keg Stout & Porter at the SIBA Beer Awards.

Celebrating English Wine Week

If you prefer a glass of wine, Britain’s Beer Day is followed by English Wine Week, which runs from the 17th to 25th June. England hasn’t got a long history of wine production, but it is a rapidly growing industry.

Due to the climate, the majority of England’s 800 vineyards are located in the South. Here, we have suitable growing conditions for grape varieties including Meunier, Chardonnay, Ortega and Solaris. Sparkling white wines are the most popular product, but you can buy local white, rosé and red wines too.

During English Wine Week, vineyards stretching from Cornwall to Kent will be opening their doors to offer public tours. Why not visit and learn a little more about the process?

Drinks Packaging: Alternatives to Glass

The majority of beer and wine is served in bottles, but what other drinks packaging is on offer?

In a bid to reduce the carbon footprint of their Music of the Spheres world tour, Coldplay sold wine in paperboard bottles at the recent Etihad Stadium gig. The bottles, sourced by When in Rome and FrugalPac, use 87% less carbon to produce than glass. Paper drinks packaging sounds unusual, but it didn’t put off the punters, as all 10,000 bottles were sold!

Talking of paperboard drinks packaging, we are seeing a return of Bag in Box (BIB) wines on supermarket shelves. The cardboard outer and plastic inner are easy to separate for recycling.

Another option is canned wine. Now, we are used to cans of beer, but it is less common with wine. However, the lightweight aluminium single-measure cans are portable and ideal for summer picnics! As an example, look at Nice Drinks mixed cases. Not British wine, however, Nice Drinks is a small, independent UK company.

A Delicious Alternative to Wine

Now, we don’t want to exclude those who prefer non-alcoholic options. Real Drinks ferments tea to create fantastic alternatives to wine. Sparkling and rich in complex flavours, their summer mixed case is the perfect addition to any garden party!
