Recycling Champions

Over half of UK household waste is reused, recycled or composted at the many recycling centres across the country. As a cardboard packaging manufacturer, we rely on residents flattening their used boxes and placing them in the recycling bin. Once collected, cardboard is one of the easiest materials to recycle. We can then make it into new boxes!

So, it was great to hear that one of our local recycling centres was voted the best in Britain!

Buckinghamshire Recycling Centre Success

As a fellow Buckinghamshire company, we extend our congratulations to the High Wycombe Recycling Centre. Run as a partnership between FCC Environment and Buckinghamshire Council, the site scored a 100% customer satisfaction rating. This, along with the popular reuse shop, were two factors that contributed to the team winning the Civic Amenity Site of the Year at the 2023 Let’s Recycle Awards.

At the High Wycombe site, investment in parking, signage and electronic advice boards have helped to improve the experience for visitors. These make it easier for customers to park up and dispose of unwanted items in separate areas for specific materials.

Visitors have commended the helpfulness of the staff and how tidy they keep the site. The team also work hard to identify any items that can be reused. These are thoroughly checked and cleaned by the team at the onsite shop, which is run by South Bucks Hospice volunteers. Items including bikes, furniture and children’s toys are sold to raise funds for this local charity.

In 2022, 22,114 tonnes of items that visitors no longer needed was saved from landfill, as it was in suitable condition for reuse and resale. That shows that the centre and charity partnership is significantly reducing the environmental impact.

Get Involved in Cardboard Recycling

Across all Buckinghamshire Recycling Centres, approximately 2,500 tonnes of cardboard are recycled annually. When you consider how lightweight corrugated cardboard is, that is a lot of boxes!

We need you to keep up the good work.

When your online purchases have been delivered and you don’t need the boxes for returns or storage, recycle. Please separate all other materials from the cardboard before disposing. Commonly, this includes parcel tape, plastic delivery note pockets and non-cardboard inserts. Then flatten the boxes before placing it in your household recycling bin.

If you have multiple cardboard boxes to dispose of and they don’t fit in the bin, secure them together in a bundle and leave them next to the bin on collection day.

Buckinghamshire has the recycling facilities to shred and pulp your collection of old boxes, to separate the fibres. They can then be reformed into cardboard sheets, which we can manufacture into industrial cartons, e-commerce packaging and postal boxes. Within weeks, they could be used to deliver your next online order to your door!

Other Recycling Champions

The full list of winners and runners-up at the Let’s Recycle Awards can be found on their website*. They include Go Beyond Recycling in #ZeroWasteHackney, where the Council and community are actively engaged in a range of initiatives including eco-schools and an annual Sustainability Day. The paper recycling champions were Ekman Recycling Ltd.

It’s great to read these success stories and showcase what is possible when we focus on waste minimisation.
