When Protective Packaging is a Top Priority

Appropriate levels of protection are an important consideration for all packaging designs. However, for some deliveries, it is a top priority. In this article, we share our work with the London Sperm Bank to create protective packaging for their precious cargo.

Deliveries to Support Fertility

Choosing to be child-free has gained wider social acceptance, but what about the people who choose to have children but can’t? Fortunately, fertility clinics provide many women with the option of having a baby. In the UK, over 80 registered fertility clinics are supplied by London Sperm Bank.

Licensed since 1992, London Sperm Bank is a fully HFEA licensed provider of donor sperm, available to women who want to become mothers.

The process demands that donations of sperm are immediately frozen. And, they must remain frozen until they are used. That means that specialist tanks are used for shipping samples to clinics across the UK. When we were contacted by the London Sperm Bank, they needed a packaging solution that would securely encase these tanks.

The specific tank dimensions demanded bespoke boxes. Protective foam inserts were also required to stabilise the tanks and ensure all deliveries arrive undamaged. In addition, the organisation wanted to use the postal boxes as part of its wider marketing strategy. Beyond functionality, they requested a sleek and professional design to promote their brand.

Lithographic Printed Boxes with a Protective Foam Insert

Aylesbury Box Company was one of several packaging manufacturers that were found in a Google search. We were selected by London Sperm Bank due to our responsive customer service. The fact that we could supply both boxes and foam inserts was also in our favour.

Our recommended packaging solution was bespoke lithographic printed boxes with protective foam inserts. We sent a sample for the organisation to test and trial. Several changes were made to the initial design and we experienced a minor setback with print quality. However, we maintained good communication throughout.

We delivered the bespoke boxes ahead of schedule and received this feedback:

“The customer service at ABC was brilliant – Martin especially helped us get through this project, which at times was difficult and time-consuming, so we want to thank him. ABC were incredibly responsive and very flexible when we made constant changes to the specifications and designs. The boxes were exactly what we wanted. The quality of the printing was perfect and provided exactly the right protection and look we were going for. Couldn’t be more pleased!”

 — Jack Davis, London Sperm Bank

The new boxes were delivered at the end of 2023 and London Sperm Bank will start to ship samples in them this year.
