Time to Meet the Neighbours?

Time to Meet the Neighbours?

In a recent YouGov Poll, 71% of UK shoppers responded that buying local produce was important. Despite this, large retailers with their generic products that have travelled from all corners of the earth, continue to dominate the market.

The poll focused on the food and beverage market, but the benefits of locally sourced goods of any kind can be great. In a weaker economic climate, sourcing from a local supply chain and distributing to a local customer base can support local success.

Cost, convenience, choice and quality are major factors that encourage buyers to make a purchase. In order to convince people to buy local, these four priorities need to be addressed.

Cost

The cost of locally produced goods might not be the cheapest option, however they may offer the best value when you look at the bigger picture. Organic, Fair Trade and Buy British goods don’t offer the cheapest price tags, yet the demand for these goods is on the increase because we can understand that cheapest isn’t always best.

Convenience

What could be more convenient than having the entire supply chain in a geographically close proximity? The opportunity to meet with suppliers and customers and to understand the needs of each party in the production and consumption process is essential if we are going to compete with large manufacturers, suppliers and retailers.

Choice

These market leaders may have an extensive range of items for us to choose from, but everything is generic; mass produced for the mass market. A local supplier may not have a great selection on the shelf, but they can offer personalised items and produce goods that specifically meet your requirements. Rather than finding the best fit, you can explain your requirements and have something purpose made.

Quality

By producing, supplying and buying higher quality goods, we get multiple benefits. From fresh tasting produce, local specialities and a thriving local economy, to bespoke design, sustainable practices and durable products, good quality means great value.

Buying local removes the need to transport goods hundreds, or even thousands, of miles. It leads to cooperative working and a sense of community. Strong local markets encourage producers to think more creatively, diversify and adapt in order to meet customer’s needs.

Maybe it’s time to meet your business neighbours; with a focus on Think Local, Buy Local, could you find the perfect solution on your doorstep?
