Change to Box Design Saves a Job

When we talk about changes to box design, we often think of new styles or rebranding. Yet, sometimes the smallest alteration can make a big difference. We were contacted by Coax Connectors who were after a bright idea. Their customers are unlikely to notice the change, but their employees do. Especially those responsible for leaving the workshop tidy at the end of the day.

The Problem with Die Cut Box Design

When we make fold-up boxes, they typically feature small rectangular cutouts. These push out to allow the tabs to slot in and this holds the box shut. However, a company that is packing hundreds of orders a day ends up with quite a pile of cut outs on the floor.

At Coax Connectors, this issue has persisted for many years and they were fed up with the daily clear-up operation. Some get trampled, others are caught beneath machinery and they also present a slip hazard. Surely, there was an alternative.

The first idea was to ask their packaging supplier if the cut outs could be removed as part of the manufacturing process. Not surprisingly, they weren’t keen to shift the problem to their warehouse floor. Unfortunately, they didn’t have any ideas to eliminate the issue.

So, when we contacted Coax Connectors it prompted a timely discussion about box design solutions. After a bit of thought, our Account Manager, Larry, considered whether a slit in the box design would be sufficient to hold the packaging shut. He tried it and sent a sample for the Coax Connectors packing team to trial.

Introducing Coax Connectors

Coax Connectors are UK specialists in the design, manufacture and supply of high-performance RF connectors. If you know all about 50 and 75 ohm connectors, for either cable, panel mounting, or PCB applications, you will know where their expertise lies. They are your go-to if you need an off-the-shelf or bespoke connector, or would like cable assemblies produced.

The team apply their knowledge to solve customer dilemmas. From recommendations and advice to creating a purpose-built option for a niche application. We share the same values of wanting to help customers achieve their desired outcomes. And, we think we have with this order.

The workshop team will be giving their feedback and, if it’s a thumbs up, we’ll make the same change to their other box design.
