Excite and Delight with Packaging

Excite and Delight with Packaging

Can you remember selecting a particular cereal because of the collectable toy it held inside?

How about cutting out tokens from a cereal packet to send off for a promotional item?

It seems that cereal companies have long understood the power of packaging in influencing our buying decisions. They also know how to make a product appealing to kids and understand the persuasive power that they can have over what ends up in the shopping trolley!

Cardboard Records

One marketing strategy that we hadn’t heard about until recently, was printing cardboard records onto the back of cereal packaging. A thin layer of plastic over the cardboard allowed the record to be sufficiently robust to survive transit and play on a record player.

These cardboard records were around in the late 1960s and into the 1970s, with the first believed to be printed on the back of a Wheaties packet. Also known as flexi records, this cut out music wasn’t going to offer the best sound quality or durability, but it added excitement and the shelf appeal of particular brands.

It seems that this innovative packaging idea was mainly available in America. Imagine how quickly the children would have wanted to eat their breakfast, so they could cut out the box and play the music, which included recordings by The Jackson 5 and The Monkees.

In addition to songs, the cardboard records included the ‘Rock Music Mysteries’, which involved listening to a series of clues in order to guess the song titles. There was also a morning workout with a cartoon character called Toucan Sam.

Innovative Packaging

Cardboard or flexi records are an example of how innovative packaging ideas can transform shelf appeal; buyers desire the box as much as the goods inside. Aylesbury Box Company can apply a range of coated finishes to our cardboard packaging. With a little vision and our help, you could enhance your marketing strategy.
