Low Cost Packaging Design

There’s no doubt that your packaging design has a considerable impact on the perception of your product. We advise that you opt for the best quality that you can afford, but there are ways to develop good, yet low-cost packaging designs.

The following points aim to provide you with food for thought when it comes to packaging on a budget.

  1. Does the product need to be fully contained within the packaging?

Our first thought is often to design packaging that the product will be placed in, but is this necessary? If you are selling a robust product that doesn’t need the protection provided by a packaging box, there are other options.

Backer cards are an example. Cardboard is cut to an agreed shape, with the option of die-cut sections, to hang the product on a display. As with other packaging options, the backer card is printed with product information and company branding. The product is tied to the backer card, rather than being contained within it.

  1. Are you looking to package a product range?

The best packaging prices are offered when you opt for a larger order. If you have several products all needing the same sized packaging, consider a generic design which includes your branding. Print labels, stickers or tags with product specific information and add these to differentiate the range.

Aylesbury Box Company recommended this approach for the Chiltern Candle Company. A simple stylish white box, with an embossed square, formed the standard packaging template. Printed stickers can then be applied within the embossed square, to ensure there was a consistent finish across the product range.

  1. Base your packaging on standard box templates

Aylesbury Box Company is asked to create all manner of interesting boxes. Our starting point for creating any design is to start with the nearest standard box. We then explore what adaptions are needed to fulfil the design brief. A few minor changes might be all it takes to create unique packaging.

By working on the same principle, you can develop product packaging or small postal boxes that won’t be overly complex or time-consuming to design and manufacture. This helps to keep costs down.

  1. Can your branding be achieved with flexographic print?

Flexographic print isn’t suited to all product packaging, but it can be used to good effect, particularly for e-commerce and subscription boxes. If it works for your design, flexographic print can be applied as part of the standard box manufacturing process.

Aylesbury Box Company suggested flexographic print when designing subscription boxes for Craftiosity. The process involves a minimal outlay for tooling, following which your boxes can be printed time and time again, at no additional cost.

  1. Is a short run of high-quality print necessary?

If you really do need a short run of packaging boxes, with full colour, high-quality print, don’t panic. Digital printing has made it possible to get what you need without breaking the bank. Ask your box manufacturer for advice to ensure you get the best value for money.

Good quality, low-cost, printed packaging is achievable. Be open to fresh ideas and don’t be afraid to ask for advice. If you would like to discuss your packaging ideas with our expert team, contact Aylesbury Box Company on 01296 436888.
