Changing Drinks Packaging
Plastic and glass bottles are popular types of drinks packaging, but there is a growing demand for beverage cans. So, what is driving this change?
Facts about Canned Drinks Packaging
Around 370 billion beverage cans a year are produced globally, with 75% made from aluminium and 25% from tin-plated steel. In the UK, 73% of collected aluminium cans are recycled; the majority at a large recycling plant in Cheshire. What’s more, producing new cans from old ones uses 95% less energy than creating new ones from scratch and they are infinitely recyclable.
Cans have long been used for soft drinks, beer and cider, keeping them refreshingly sparkling and hey are now being used for a greater range of beverages. You might choose to purchase cold brew coffee, pre-mixed cocktails, wine, juice, health drinks or water in metal packaging. Which is your favourite?
Why are Cans a Top Choice for Drinks Packaging?
According to the latest Can Makers Research Report*, 60% of adults surveyed thought that cans were the most convenient drinks packaging. Furthermore, demand is expected to continue rising between 2023 and 2030. One reason is that cans provide individual portions, making it easier for people to monitor what they are drinking and reduce waste. What other reasons are making metal cans a top choice?
Cans V Plastic Bottles
Firstly, cans provide a viable plastic-free packaging option. As a result, when brands switch to cans they avoid costs associated with the Plastic Tax. Research conducted by Metal Packaging Europe revealed that consumers view cans as a positive environmental choice. It is known that this packaging is widely recycled and therefore is increasingly favoured over plastic bottles.
To further reduce plastic use, some brands are using cardboard solutions for multi-can packaging, in place of plastic wrap.
Cans V Glass Bottles
Secondly, cans are lighter weight than glass bottles, which cuts shipping costs. In addition, the risk of breakages and leaks is reduced when you switch from glass to cans. They also allow consumers to take drinks to places where glass bottles are banned, for example, festivals, sports events and beaches. If you do, don’t leave your litter; please ensure you bin them or take them home.
Unlike glass bottles, branding can be applied directly to the can. This avoids the need for labels and improves recyclability.
Don’t Crush Cans!
There was a time when we were told to crush cans for recycling. However, the advice is now to empty the contents, but leave the can uncrushed. This can make it easier to identify in the sorting process.
