Packaging and PRN Recycling

Packaging and PRN Recycling

All UK businesses have an obligation to recover and recycle packaging waste. If you feel that this is a burden, you may like to refer to the recent Valpak Packflow 2025 Study. The data suggests that the cost of this resource management is significantly lower in the UK than in all other European countries except Spain.

In a recent review of current practices, DEFRA decided to make no changes to the current PRN recycling system and the regulations that are in force. Whether you are sticking to the guidelines or doing all you can to minimise the carbon footprint of your business, there are a number of points to consider when it comes to packaging design.

Packaging Design

A growing number of designers are considering the ‘end of life’ stages when working on new packaging concepts. This typically involves greater consideration of the material being used and a means of easily separating materials to increase the recycling potential.

When it comes to sustainable materials, cardboard has a lot to offer. Made from up to 100% recycled fibres and naturally biodegradable, cardboard really is a green option. Cardboard recycling facilities are widespread and this also makes it easy to manage cardboard packaging waste.

With the right design, cardboard can be folded into a solid, sturdy form without the need for adhesives, tapes or staples. When adhesive is necessary, water based options are available.

For certain requirements, cardboard can be printed as part of the box manufacture process using water based inks. This reduces the energy and costs associated with separate printing processes. Alternatively cardboard embossing can reduce or eliminate the need for printing.

Creative design and print can also encourage consumers to reuse the packaging. Imagine how much more exciting and reusable toy packaging becomes if it includes push out shapes that children can slot together to form planes or animals!

Packaging Waste

Even without tighter packaging waste regulations, your company can set a good example. Aylesbury Box Company can help you to be proactive in your cardboard packaging design to help minimise waste.
