The Power of Books
Are you gripped by a real page turner?

Books provide us with knowledge, entertainment, information and inspiration. The words on the page can make us laugh, cry or offer us a new perspective. A local charity also believes that books can help to rebuild a country.
Build on Books
Build on Books was set up in Marlow in 2009. The aim was to send shipments of books from the UK to Sierra Leone in the hope of providing educational resources for schools and communities. With books it is possible to learn and gain the skills and qualifications needed to prepare for the future.
Sierra Leone had endured a decade of conflict in which schools, libraries and the books held inside were burnt to the ground. When the country regained politically stability, the lack of books and other learning resources meant the children had little hope of performing well at school.
As English is the main language of Sierra Leone, Build on Books decided to help. In the last 8 years the charity has sent over 30,000 books to schools and libraries. Early readers have helped young children to learn basic reading skills, fiction has developed a love of reading through all generations, whilst reference books, dictionaries and non-fiction have been studied by students in and out of the classroom.
Boxes of Books
Aylesbury Box Company provides shipping boxes for Build on Books at cost. We’re currently in the process of manufacturing the next batch of 500 boxes for the charity. If you can donate good quality books to fill these boxes, Build on Books would love to hear from you.
In addition to books, the charity has also filled our boxes with clothes, shoes, cooking utensils and medical supplies. These have been particularly welcomed by communities affected by the Ebola crisis. They’ve also been there to help provide safe drinking water, build schools and provide tools and seeds to help communities to get back on their feet.
