Celebrating Companies that Think Outside the Box

Gerard® Roofing Tiles

Across the UK, roof tiles have typically been made from terracotta, slate or concrete, but is there another way to crown our homes? Gerard Roofing Systems have proven there is.

How did WWII RAF hangers provide the inspiration for a new roofing system?

During wartime, RAF hangers were erected across the country to store, prepare and repair the aircraft used in battle. When these were being disassembled, it was noted that a coating of bitumen paint had been applied to the steel roofing. This had protected it from rust and corrosion. An idea was sparked.

Over 60 years on, the Gerard® Roofing System has undergone many developments. It is now formed from seven layers. These include Alu-zinc steel carefully coated with natural stone chips and sealed with an acrylic barrier coating. The result is a lightweight, yet incredibly strong roof tile.

The interlocking design makes installation straightforward. When fitted, the roof tiles form secure, fire-resistant and weather-proof protection to any home. There is global interest in the product, yet the biggest market is in Africa, where millions of tiles now adorn the rooftops.

Request for a Branded Tile Samples Box

Gerard® Roofing Systems approached Aylesbury Box Company to develop a robust packaging solution for tile samples. With markets across the world, the box had to be suited for shipping. In addition to branding, the packaging would also be used as a means of providing information about the product. It had to be able to be used to display tiles at exhibitions, in showrooms and by the sales team.

With samples of the tiles to work with, our experienced packaging design team were able to create a bespoke packaging solution. The box is divided into two sections, where different tiles can be held in place by internal dividers.

As the box is opened to show the tile samples, vital information about scientific testing is clearly displayed, along with the company branding. The gloss finish contrasts well with the natural stone and gives a professional look. An integrated handle also makes it easy for the sales team to carry around to meetings with developers. As you can see in the image, we have worked on alternative tile box designs for other companies.

Sustainable Packaging Solution

Another important factor for Gerard® Roofing Systems was that the packaging design would be sustainable. The company are active in their commitment to reducing environmental impact. The tiles help to reflect heat in hot countries, to keep homes cool without artificial ventilation. They are also sufficiently well insulated to reduce heat loss and noise pollution.

Their dedicated African team have not only been supplying to developers, but they have also provided comprehensive training courses for local installers. This action supports the sustainability of the local economy. As each tile has a 50-year warranty, the workforce needs to be skilled in installation on new builds, as there will be little need for repairs.

The full range of includes Milano, Heritage, Shake and Slate effect tiles. All have been tested to withstand monsoon rains, strong winds, salt corrosion and other destructive atmospheric conditions. You can find more details on the Gerard® Roofing Systems website.
