Summer isn’t Summer Without Ice Cream
If there is one food that we associate with holidays and summer days, it’s ice cream. Aylesbury Box company have recently delivered bespoke boxes that will be filled with Ice Cream Tubs and Ice Cream Cakes. Let’s fire up those tastebuds and find out more about the business!
Introducing Ruby Violet
Ruby Violet handmakes ice cream using organic milk, fresh fruit and a traditional British process. They also make fresh vegan sorbets, ice cream cakes and offer an ice-cream subscription service; tasty flavours delivered to your door every month!
The mission to produce high-quality ice cream, using locally sourced produce, began in 2011. Named after the owner’s maternal grandma, Ruby Violet was initially a home enterprise. With determination to make the business a success, Julie Fisher went from selling at a weekly market to opening the Tufnell Park parlour. A second ice-cream parlour in Kings Cross followed in 2016.
They are now in the process of moving production to Bedford. The traditional techniques will continue in these new facilities, but they have the space to make sufficient supplies to fulfil growing online sales.
How do you Sell Ice Cream Online?
Like many businesses, Ruby Violet had to close the doors when the pandemic forced a national lockdown. They had to rethink their approach and explore the option of UK-wide online sales.
Every online retailer wants their goods to be protected in transit and arrive in top condition, but it takes a bit of experimentation and trial and error to work out how to keep ice cream frozen. The winning solution involves an outer and inner cardboard boxes, separated by a layer of wool and dry ice.
Corrugated cardboard boxes and wool both offer naturally insulating properties, so they are ideal for the job. The fact that they are both sustainable packaging materials is a bonus!
Packaging Design; Making the Whole Experience Fun
Having found a practical solution, Ruby Violet focused on other aspects of the customer experience. They didn’t want to send luxury ice cream cakes and tubs full of cooling delights in a plain cardboard box. Tucking into ice cream is a treat, an indulgence and they wanted to carry the delight through the packaging design.
Julie had a clear idea of how she wanted the branded packaging to look. Like the ice cream parlours, the boxes should be colourful and fun. She began contacting packaging suppliers, but none seemed to be able to bring her vision to life. Then she spoke to Adam at Aylesbury Box Company.
“Adam was really helpful, provided great communication and was upfront about the lead times. He sent samples, with colour print options which helped us to make informed decisions about the packaging design. He double-checked the information I provided and our order was delivered on time. The boxes look great, everyone in the team likes them and we know they will enhance the customer experience. It’s so much better than sending plain cardboard boxes.”
