Ticking the Boxes for an Afternoon Out
Aylesbury Box Company have become a charity partner to Lindengate. The impressive gardens are being opened to the public as part of the National Garden Scheme Open Gardens event. We know it ticks all the boxes for an afternoon out, so we’d love to tell you more.
Let’s start by getting the date in your diary – Sunday 22 May 1.00 – 5.00pm.
About Lindengate
Lindengate provides a range of gardening, conservation, craft and wellbeing activities to help individuals manage a range of mental health conditions. It is widely known that spending time in nature, out in the fresh air and in the company of others is beneficial to our wellbeing. Building on this, Lindengate incorporates creative pursuits to develop skills and provide a sense of achievement.
Every week, groups of people attend specially designed sessions in this caring environment. The collaboration between staff, volunteers and guests have transformed a disused and uninspiring allotment site into a place of wonder.
The 5-acre site now includes a heritage orchard, kitchen garden, sensory garden and pond. The site is full of structures and artwork which add form and interest as you explore. There are plenty of benches for people to sit, relax and take in the beauty of nature.

There are so many worthy causes, but our criteria for a local, sustainable and nature-orientated narrowed the field. Having visited Lindengate and learnt about the different groups being supported by the organisation, our decision was made.
Lindengate Open Day
The great news is that Lindengate is holding an Open Gardens event for the public as part of the National Garden Scheme. On Sunday 22 May 2022, visitors can explore the grounds, discover more about conservation and other projects or simply enjoy a biodiverse environment.
The team will be selling produce, plants and crafts on this open day and refreshments will be available too. It ticks all the boxes for a delightful afternoon out. Entry to the event is £5 for adults. Further information is provided on the NGS website: https://ngs.org.uk/view-garden/36112
If you are unable to attend on this date but are keen to visit, the gardens welcome visitors every Wednesday from 4.30 – 7.30pm through the summer, as well as Saturdays from 1.30 – 4.30pm.
The National Garden Scheme
In 1927, Miss Elsie Wagg suggested that the nation’s obsession with gardens could be a means of raising money for district nursing. The idea became the National Garden Scheme, with 609 gardens opening in the first year.
The scheme has raised £63 million for beneficiary nursing and health charities in the last 95 years, whilst also bringing pleasure to thousands of people who enjoy visiting gardens. Over 3,500 gardens are opening their doors in 2022.
Other gardens local to Aylesbury Box Company are Horatio’s Garden at the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and Acer Corner, a private garden in Wendover. These and other gardens might provide you with the inspiration to develop your green fingers. From edible herbs to striking blooms, bee-friendly species or trees for the next generations, gardening and time spent in nature is good for the environment and our wellbeing.
