Steps Towards Net Zero: Carbon Offset

Since 2000, we have taken steps to reduce the environmental impact of our cardboard manufacturing processes. While we have achieved many of our goals, this is a process of continuous improvement. As such, we are now focused on becoming a Net Zero packaging company. And, with this in mind, we have cautiously explored carbon offset.

Reducing Carbon Emissions at Aylesbury Box Company

At Aylesbury Box Company, we measure the direct and indirect carbon emissions associated with the production and transportation of our cardboard boxes. Our comprehensive approach encompasses various activities, including:

  • Raw material production
  • Energy consumption
  • Transportation logistics
  • Water and waste management
  • Employee commutes and travel

Since 2020, the changes made to our processes have resulted in a 20% decline in carbon emissions. We’re proud of this achievement. What’s more, being able to evidence sustainability has helped us to retain and gain customers. However, our efforts to reach Net Zero continue.

In some cases, the actions needed to negate emissions will take years to implement. So, while plans are in motion, we wanted to explore more immediate options to make a difference. Carbon offset was an option, yet we were sceptical about this approach. Therefore, we thoroughly researched the options to find a solution that adheres to the highest standards.

What is Carbon Offset?

Carbon offset is an investment into projects that reduce CO2 in the atmosphere or increase carbon storage. This investment compensates for emissions generated through our business activities.

The main issue with carbon offset is that many companies have simply paid into schemes to gain a green reputation, rather than changing their internal practices. Equally, not all schemes are regulated and even when they are, the results are not instant, so the impact isn’t always clear.

We did not want to risk associations with greenwashing. However, we did feel that carbon offset could complement our green credentials. Therefore, we weighed up all the options and found a company that does meet a broad range of international standards. We feel that Carbon Footprint Limited are sufficiently reliable and transparent to match our ethos.

Examples of Carbon Offset Projects

Carbon Footprint Limited invests in global projects with environmental and social benefits.

These include:

  • The protection and management of natural habitats
  • Renewable energy including small-scale wind, hydro-electric and solar power projects
  • Safe water & energy efficient cooking facilities for communities
  • Methane capture projects
  • Native tree planting & reforestation

Giving Packaging Customers the Option of Carbon Offset

This is a new scheme for us, which we will offer on a case-by-case basis. We are initially talking to long-standing customers about their sustainability policy, goals and interest in carbon offset. At this early stage, just one customer has decided to go ahead and we have offered it to them at no cost.

We expect a relatively low uptake, yet feel this is a good addition to our work towards environmental sustainability.

If you are an existing Aylesbury Box Company customer who would like to know more, please speak to John, Adam, Helen or Larry. If you are looking for a sustainable packaging manufacturer and would like to find out more, please email equiries@abcbox.co.uk or call 01296 436888.
