Packaging Predictions: What’s in Store for 2024?
There’s no better time for packaging predictions than the New Year! So, what do we see influencing design in the road ahead?
Packaging Materials
Firstly, after several years of increases, market forecasts suggest that paper prices will stabilise in 2024. This will make it easier for cardboard packaging manufacturers like us to provide accurate quotes for customers.
Secondly, the shift away from single-use plastic, plastic fillers and plastic windows in cardboard retail packaging continues. This is driven by consumer awareness of environmental impact and by a desire to reduce Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) payments. We expect to see this remain a top priority, especially as PPT will increase on 1 April 2024. Therefore, we expect to see brands exploring other packaging materials.
Fortunately, there are a growing number of alternatives. From 100% recyclable moisture-resistant coatings for cardboard boxes to biodegradable fillers. Paper airbags, scrunched kraft paper, wood foam and cardboard inserts are a few examples.
Packaging Design
As a packaging manufacturer, we have proactively informed customers of design solutions that optimise packaging. That means offering the best fit and functionality without excess. For both environmental and cost benefits, many brands have simplified packaging design and the move has been supported by their customers. We expect this minimal approach to continue throughout 2024.
With circular thinking also impacting design, we expect to see growing interest in packaging design solutions that promote reuse or refill. Beautiful graphics, resealable adhesive strips and printed templates are just a few examples of how reuse can be encouraged.
Printed Packaging Predictions
The minimal design style extends to the print finish. You’ll be amazed what can be achieved with a limited colour palette! Using print, yet restricting the colours helps to keep costs down, whilst differentiating your brand from the competition. We’ve printed some fantastic typography, geometric patterns and graphics, that help brands stand apart and expect this to continue in 2024.
Another packaging prediction is an increase in interactive elements. These include:
– QR codes that engage buyers in a brand story, games or competitions
– RFID tags that enable tracking and data collection
– Augmented reality, with elements that can be scanned by an app and ‘come to life’
– Navilens codes which provide visually impaired buyers with product information
– Barcodes which support warehouse logistics
– Hashtags, which encourage engagement on social channels
What interactive elements could you add to your packaging?
Ethical Print & Finishes
The environmental impact of printing continues to be a point of concern. Therefore, water-based and soy inks are increasingly favoured. On this ethical point, we were asked to print one order in vegan inks last year. That request led to research into options that could guarantee that no animal products are used. So, if you run a vegan company, we can now recommend a suitable ink for printing.
In addition, research led us to a 100% recyclable moisture resistant coating last year. This solution was thoroughly tested by our team and proved highly effective. Fortunately, the carpet remained dry, even when a box was filled with water and left in our office for weeks! We continue to explore sustainable options that help us and our customers to minimise environmental impact.
On that point, if you are championing ethical values, let your customers know! We recommend you print certification and other widely recognised symbols and certification info onto packaging. From FSC® to Plastic-free, Fairtrade to British Made, your packaging is a tangible item on which to communicate with customers. So, make good use of this opportunity to share your values!
