Insert Here: Packaging and Presentation

Whether or not you are a fan of Apple products, there is one thing that cannot be denied and that is the quality of the packaging. The ideal space for every item, accessory and leaflet has been considered and created. The quality of the packaging and presentation makes it feel like you’ve made a special purchase and unboxing is a treat.

A Plain Box is Not Good Enough

I read an article about Steve Jobs and his attitude to packaging and presentation*. It said that when launching his first product, the Macintosh computer, he was advised to use a plain box. This would have been the most economical option, yet economical was not the brand image he was after. Instead, he opted for full-colour printed boxes with die-cut handles. These cost considerably more, yet instantly set his brand apart.

Hi believed that ‘people form an opinion about a company or product based on the signals it conveys’. Therefore, the packaging and presentation are essential elements in the perceived value of the item or items they hold.

Even for start-ups, we would recommend instilling your brand values in your packaging design from the off-set. If you’re targeting the budget-conscious buyer, then a plain box might fit the bill. However, in most cases, some thoughts about packaging and presentation will help you to attract more interest, social shares and fans.

You don’t need to splash out on full-colour designs, as there are plenty of cost-effective print options and insert solutions that can be used to enhance your boxes.

Packaging Inserts to Elevate Product Packaging and Presentation

A good way to elevate your packaging is with inserts. Inserts include corrugated dividers, such as those used in bottle boxes, flat layer pads and shaped fittings.

These play multiple roles:

Consistent presentation – Every time a box is opened, the buyer sees the product the right way up in its designated space.

Keeping various elements or parts separate – This can be beneficial when there is a risk that items may get damaged, tangled or contaminated. In this way, inserts in cardboard boxes help to boost customer satisfaction and reduce returns. We suggest inserts are essential for fragile goods, electronics and scented items including candles, cosmetics and foods.

Robust packaging – The inserts add strength to the packaging which reduces the risk of damage during shipping, handling and storage. In addition, it feels like a higher quality box, which goes back to that perception of your product and brand.

Easy packing – when everything has its place, it is easier for the team on your packaging line. They haven’t got to fiddle around with void fill, they simply slot the items into position.

Adjustable packaging – sometimes we use inserts as a means of adjusting a standard box to accommodate different-sized e-commerce orders.

Insulation – inserts can be used to help regulate the internal temperature of the box during shipping. Cardboard and wool liners are widely used for packing pharmaceutical and consumable goods.

Printed Inserts Add Impact

When inserts are made from corrugated cardboard, they can be printed as easily as the outside of the box. We can flood print in a single brand colour or incorporate a message or instructions.

Alternatively, you might keep the insert plain and apply colour to the inside of the box. Take a look at the image of a box we’ve produced for Dcypher. When you open this box, you see your products laid out and get an impactful hit of colour.

Set the Bar High for Packaging and Presentation

It’s easy to settle for a plain box, but this is a missed opportunity to market your brand and product. Why not set the bar high by giving thought to your packaging and presentation?
