Get Plastic Clever
Back in April, we wrote about Water To Go, one of our amazing customers who are committed to providing access to clean, safe to drink water in reusable water bottles. Their unique bottles include a filter that instantly makes river, pond or any non-salt water source drinkable. You can read the full blog here.
Water To Go was demonstrating their bottles at the Steppes Beyond festival at the Royal Geographical Society in London at the weekend. Joined by organisations including Kids Against Plastic, Incredible Oceans and City To Sea, there was a clear message on the damaging effects of single use plastics.
It was seeing the plastic and chemical waste being released by textile factories into the surrounding environments that prompted the design, development and patent of the Water To Go bottles. These factories were on the other side of the world, but they were supplying UK stores. The fact is that we all contribute to the problem and we all need to get plastic clever – every single one of us.
Each time we buy a drink in a single use plastic bottle, we pay 5p for a carrier bag, or unwrap a convenience meal, we are adding to the enormous pile of non-biodegradable waste. This plastic is filling our seas, beaches and countryside.
Individuals Getting Plastic Clever
It is almost impossible to avoid plastic products altogether, but we can make smarter decisions. Invest in a refillable Water To Go bottle and inspire your local cafe to sign up the City to Sea’s refill scheme or Kids Against Plastic’s plastic clever scheme.
Make a conscious decision to buy brands that use alternative recyclable packaging materials and ethical practices. Refuse plastic ‘give away’ items. Keep taking your bag for life to the supermarket. See if your favourite cosmetics are supplied in glass pots and if not, let the company know that that’s something you are interested in.
Retailers Getting Plastic Clever
Retailers have a choice about what products to stock. By taking an active stand against plastic, it is possible for retailers to help customers make informed choices. Support the brands that have found alternative packaging materials, provide paper bags for customers and join schemes that can influence positive change in the local community.
Manufacturers Getting Plastic Clever
Consider where the plastic components in your products could be replaced by alternative biodegradable materials. As a cardboard box manufacturer, we are encouraging customers to opt for smart packaging design, cardboard inserts and cardboard or WoolCool fillers, in order to minimise the use of plastic air pockets or bubble wrap.
