Did Ikea spring to mind?

Much as we are fans of Ikea’s sustainability policy, including the use of cardboard pallets, the flat pack furniture we’re exploring in this blog is made from corrugated cardboard.

Dutch Design Chair

Created by Tim Vardy, this simple flat packed cardboard chair weighs only 896 grams and is therefore easy to transport and carry. Despite this, it is sufficiently robust to support sitters of up to 400lb or 200kg. This makes it a practical solution when the need for additional seating arises.

The chairs are printed in a range of designs including wood effect, maps, cow print and a book design that is popular in libraries and literary festivals. The chair is made from FSC Certified corrugated cardboard and nothing else. When it is no longer required, it can be fully recycled.

Retailing at around £25, it is affordable, as well as practical and sustainable.

Dornob Flat Pack Chairs

David Graas, a designer at Dornob has designed a range of corrugated cardboard furniture, including stools and chairs. The flat-pack furniture arrives in pre-cut sheets. The shapes are simple to punch out and slot together. The slotted sheets give the furniture considerable strength.

Again, this seating solution is formed from nothing other than corrugated cardboard. This makes it lightweight, affordable and fully recyclable.

VouwWow VW01 Honeycomb Chair

Based on the design concepts of Michelle Thonet, the VW01 is created from 100% recycled honeycomb cardboard. With minimal weight, these chairs are easy to transport and store. They look incredibly comfy too.

When required, they are folded into shape without the need for glue, screws or DIY skills. The design also makes it straightforward to dismantle and reassemble many times over. When these cardboard chairs become surplus to requirements in your pop up shop, staff breakout room or youth club, they can be recycled and made into new chairs!

Chairigami

Chairigami was set up by Zach Rotholz in America with the aim of producing strong, low-cost furniture from renewable resources. Having honed his cardboard engineering skills in a number of design roles, he has created all manner of flat packed corrugated cardboard furniture options including armchairs, bookcases and even a cardboard chaise lounge.
