Oxford’s Independent Coffee Roasters
The UK is a nation of coffee drinkers and many of us can’t function without our daily dose of this rich and revitalising beverage. The issue is that not all coffees are created equal, so we need to keep tasting until we find one that delights our palette.
Back in 2009, the first independent, central Oxford coffee shop opened on Turl Street. This was the start of Missing Bean Coffee Roasters’ commercial success. By 2014, Missing Bean had visited and sourced coffee beans from growers across the globe. They experimented with flavours, invested in equipment and began freshly roasting their own blends to serve in the cafe.
The Turl Street coffee shop was recently refurbished and is now joined by several sister shops, including those in Abingdon and Banbury. In 2019, Missing Bean also opened an online shop, where favourite blends or coffee subscriptions can be ordered for delivery to your door.
This established business may have grown, yet it has been conscious to retain the friendly, local nature and commitment to both great coffee and ethical sourcing that underpinned its launch.
Bespoke Boxes for Deliveries
Ethical sourcing is not limited to the coffee beans; the packaging counts too. From coffee pods to pouches, Missing Bean has opted for plant-based, compostable packaging options. These are packed into 100% recyclable cardboard boxes for delivery.
In a perfectly timed call, we spoke to them about their packaging requirements. They had previously used two different box companies and were considering the options. The issue was that standard box sizes weren’t offering the best fit for orders. So, they wanted a company that could manufacture bespoke boxes to the exact dimensions they required.
Branded Packaging: Getting the Balance Right
In addition to being the correct size, the boxes needed to be of sufficient quality and strength to reliably protect their coffee in transit. Their final requirement was branding. Roastery & Marketing Manager Olly commented:
“We see lots of stunning packaging, but it often includes unnecessary layers and excessive use of inks. Whilst we want to be a recognisable brand with quality products and packaging, we are also mindful of sustainability. Our branded packaging has to balance appearance with our ethics.”
Our pricing was competitive and the mock-up designs were well received, so Missing Bean placed their order. As their box supplies were running low, a quick turnaround was requested.
