Warehousing and Packaging
Fulfilling our appetite for goods is dependent on two factors; warehousing and packaging. The humble cardboard box and behind-the-scenes operations rarely make the headlines. However, this could be the year when warehousing and packaging make their way into the limelight!
The Year of Warehousing
To mark its 80th year of operation, the UK Warehousing Association (UKWA) has declared 2024, the Year of Warehousing. As a result, it has planned a range of events and initiatives to raise the profile of the industry and continue its mission to raise standards.
We supply cardboard packaging to several fulfilment firms, so, we were keen to find out more about what the Year of Warehousing will include. Initial announcements show the organisation is:
- Introducing a Warehouse Manager CPC qualification
- Mapping out the UK warehousing landscape to illustrate the scope of the industry
- Promoting the use of renewable energy, specifically the installation of solar panels on warehouse rooftops to help power processes
- Exploring innovative ways to optimise packaging and reduce unnecessary boxes being sent out
There are plenty more plans in the pipeline, with further information being shared on the UKWA website throughout 2024.
Sustainable Packaging Solutions
As a packaging manufacturer, we are particularly interested in the UKWA aims to optimise packaging and reduce waste. It is keen to reduce the volume of packaging used and discarded with each shipment. As millions of items are picked, packed and shipped in cardboard boxes every day, small changes can make a big difference.
Did you know that 90% of all orders are shipped in cardboard?
The advantages of this packaging material include the fact that this paper-based packaging:
- Offers a great weight-to-strength ratio
- Is low cost and widely available
- Is manufactured from a high percentage of recycled materials and is widely recycled
- Raw material comes from renewable sources
- Provides cushioning and insulation
- Is straightforward to print or apply finishes to
However, improvements can be made. At present, there are still too many examples of orders being sent in excessive packaging; particularly over-sized cardboard boxes, crammed with void filler. Equally, when multiple items are ordered from one company, they are sent in separate boxes, rather than collecting all parts into one package.
The UKWA is working with researchers to optimise packaging to prevent this waste. This includes developing smart software that helps pickers and packers to fulfil orders in the best-sized box. We look forward to reading about the innovations and opportunities that this fresh approach brings. How might this alter your fulfilment process?
Reduce Packaging Volumes for Warehouse Fulfilment
We have already worked with several fulfilment companies to help them reduce packaging volumes and ensure they never run out of boxes!
Most orders for industrial shipping boxes are for standard sizes as detailed in the Internationally recognised FEFCO Code. They are predominantly 0200 Slotted Boxes or 0700 Ready Glued Boxes. Both are supplied flat packed, ready for quick assembly, packing and taping shut.
We supply standard dimensions. However, we also manufacture bespoke boxes to provide the best fit for specific products or a selection of goods which are commonly bought together. This can negate the need for void filler and reduce the overall volume of packaging required for shipments. In addition, we produce inserts to separate items. These make it viable to ship multiple items in one box.
As we manufacture industrial packaging in-house, and offer stock holding, our team provides a responsive service for fulfilment companies. We offer a range of finishes, including moisture-resistant coatings and print. How can we help you?
