Versatile Cardboard Packaging Solutions

Cardboard is known to be a versatile packaging material, which can be cut and folded to produce an extensive range of shapes. As specialists in custom made boxes, we love the challenge of creating best fit solutions. In this article, we share a range of ways in which cardboard packaging can be adaptable to meet your shipping requirements.

Option One: Removable Cardboard Inserts

Cardboard inserts are a practical way to use one box for multiple order combinations.

Let’s give you some examples:

We worked with a drinks company that sold mixed cases. Each box could contain a combination of wine bottles, cider or beer bottles and cans. So, we designed a box that could hold 6 wine bottles, then made removable inserts that provided a versatile solution when smaller options were packed.

An online retailer was preparing three tea gift sets. The contents of each were different, but they wanted a cost-effective packaging solution. In response, we created a branded box and three insert options. So, it is just a case of sliding in the right insert to pack and send orders.

One of our customers has developed an innovative item of portable body strengthening kit. This is sold as a single, double or triple set. New to the market, they didn’t know how many would sell. Therefore, they wanted to focus their packaging budget on quality over quantity. So, we designed a printed box for the triple set and provided two insert options. These ensure good protection and presentation when sending out the single and double sets.

Option Two: Perforations in Cardboard Packaging

Perforations are a simple, yet effective way of extending the uses of your cardboard boxes.

Let’s give you some examples:

When designing boxes for a garden centre, they needed a way of holding a variety of standard plant pot sizes. For this brief, our bespoke packaging solution was to perforate concentric circles into the cardboard. Now the packers can simply push out the appropriate circle to fit the size of the pot.

The most common use of perforations in our packaging supplies is for shelf ready packaging. These allow robust shipping boxes to transform into practical display boxes for the retailer. It’s just a case of cutting or tearing along the perforations and sliding the box base, full of the product, onto the shelf.

Equally, perforated handles and tabs ensure that boxes are airtight during transit, yet provide easier handling or opening cardboard packaging when received by the customer.

Option Three: Adjustable Height Cardboard Boxes

Adjustable height boxes make it simple to provide a good fit.

We can manufacture single or double walled boxes which are pre-scored at intervals. This solution allows one style of box to work for different orders. It works like this; if the items that you are packing require a smaller box, just fold the sides to the appropriate height and cut at the corners. It’s a good option if you lack the storage space for multiple sized shipping boxes.

Option Four: Colour Print to Differentiate Range

Switch the ink for a cost-effective way to distinguish your range.

Cardboard packaging is straightforward to print. To add fonts, graphics and branding to your boxes, we create printing plates. There is a charge for this service, however, once made, these plates can be reused time and again for every order.

Any colour of ink can be applied to the plates to create printed packaging. Therefore, you can add a seasonal twist or create a limited edition by simply switching the colour. Equally, there’s an opportunity to get great value by selecting different ink colours for each option in your product range.
