Industrial Cartons for UK Manufacturers
When Aylesbury Box Company first launched, we were solely focused on the production of industrial cartons for local and international shipping. Although they are often unprinted and uninspiring, these heavy-duty boxes play a practical role in protecting goods in transit. Therefore, despite ever rising demand for printed e-commerce packaging, we still ship thousands of industrial boxes to UK manufacturers. One even featured in a recent television programme!
What is an Industrial Carton?
Industrial cartons are corrugated cardboard boxes, which are used to pack goods ready for distribution and storage. These rigid boxes are designed to be sturdy and strong. As such, they can be stacked, transported and handled whilst protecting the goods inside.
The majority of industrial cartons are large, double-walled corrugated cardboard boxes. However, we also manufacture triple-walled boxes to provide added protection for weighty or fragile goods. Cut from a single sheet of cardboard, the sides are glued, stapled or stitched together to form a robust structure.
Industrial cartons are often plain brown boxes, however, they can be printed with handling information or branding, as required. As part of the standard manufacturing process, our print finishes are a low cost option. In addition, we can manufacture inserts to separate components, provide additional rigidity and hold items in place.
We have access to drop testing facilities, enabling us to put samples of the goods and packaging to the test. This can help determine whether triple walled boxes are needed for reliable protection or if lower-cost, double walled boxes are sufficient.
The Advantage of Pallet Boxes
Our industrial boxes are shipped flat pack to minimise space needed in transportation and storage. The majority are sent as pallet boxes, which simplifies loading and warehouse storage. Pallet boxes are where a base tray is affixed to a wooden pallet and the flat pack boxes are loaded on. A top tray, banding and/or wrapping holds the packaging in place. The advantage of pallet boxes is they can easily be moved in bulk using a fork lift.
Industrial Boxes Make Cameo Appearance!
Industrial packaging may provide a practical shipping solution, however, it is a plain, everyday item. It’s a far cry from some of the striking designs found in retail packaging. This was why we were delighted, and a little surprised, to see one of our boxes on television. It had a cameo appearance in a recent BBC programme!
Inside the Factory follows the manufacturing process of a specific item. On 15th Feb 2023 (an episode first aired in January 2022) it featured the Ercol Windsor chair. Presenter, Greg Wallace, visited the Buckinghamshire Ercol factory to discover what was involved in creating this stylish chair. As a design classic, it has been in continuous production since it was first launched in the mid 1950’s.
The programme featured the specialist CNC machinery used to cut and shape the key components from solid Ash timber. It also showed the process of steam bending the back bow, skilled sanding and assembling the parts. It demonstrated the craftsmanship that goes into making each of the 300 chairs that the company ships every week.
After finishing the chair with water-based lacquer and a final sanding, the chair was placed in a robust industrial box. Finally, we saw it being loaded onto the lorry, ready to be shipped across the UK to furniture shops or around the globe. This was it; a few seconds of fame for a humble box!
