Harrods Delivers
Electric Vehicles & Packaging Supplies Support Growth in Local and International On-line Orders
As the best known luxury store, Harrods is one of the most popular destinations for visitors to London. With opulent window displays and the chance of spotting a celebrity whilst you shop, many people are tempted through the doors. Inside is an extensive collection of designer clothes, luxury brands, jewellery, fashion accessories and gifts.
The majority of visitors will take time to browse, eat and buy in Harrods Food Hall. It is filled with tasty treats, exotic flavours and favourite dishes from across the globe. It is this department which has the closest links to the original wholesaler and tea merchant that was established in Knightsbridge back in 1834.
Electric Vehicle Delivery
Due to the demand for its produce, Harrods began a home delivery service in 1919. In order to serve local customers in London, the store introduced a fleet of electric vans that brought orders to the door. In a return to its heritage, the company has announced that the latest vehicle in its current fleet is a Nissan e-NV 200.
This all electric van has been customised for Harrods. The storage area has been refrigerated in order that it can be used to deliver fresh produce to London customers. This addition to the delivery fleet will be able to cover 240km, making an average of 50 deliveries, on one weekly charge.
International Delivery
An electric van may be ideal for local delivery, but another strategy is needed in order to respond to the rapid growth of international orders. Harrods has reported that international deliveries have doubled in the last 9 months, largely on account of the rate of exchange following the UK’s vote to leave the EU.
A favourable exchange rate has encouraged buyers from across America, the Middle East and Europe to snap up high end goods at a great price. Whilst e-commerce contributes just 5% of total sales, this opportunity to boost sales is too good to miss. In response the company has fast tracked its plans to transform its supply chain and distribution systems.
Investment in racking, automation and packaging supply chains are all coming into force this year in order to increase efficiency and reliably meet the expectations of online customers.
