Do Your Boxes Survive a Drop & Shake?

We undertake a series of in-house checks to ensure that products are properly protected during storage and transit. These offer reassurance if you have concerns about whether your boxes survive a drop and shake or two.

However, for more accurate data, we partner with Smurfit Kappa. They have invested in automated machines which offer more accurate, standardised tests to assess packaging performance. A group of us recently visited Smurfit Kappa’s factory to observe the processes they use to test boxes.

What Packaging Tests Can Be Carried Out?

Our visit focused on four commonly requested packaging tests:

Drop Test – Firstly, the drop test machine. Chessington’s Croc Drop ride sprang to mind! The boxes are loaded and raised to the desire height, before being released. They fall to a platform corner first, to check if the cardboard boxes are sufficiently robust to protect the goods inside.

Vibration Test – Next, was a vibrating machine. A full bottle box was loaded onto the machine, which gave it a rigorous shake. This ensure that the box and inserts are effective at preventing broken bottle, scratched labels and other damage.

Moisture Tests – We were also informed about the humidifier, to establish moisture resistance of cardboard boxes. A step up is the soak test, which ensures boxes are manufactured from an appropriate board grade.

These machines all replicate the movement, impact and conditions that regularly occur during shipping. We found it useful to see the machines in action and be shown around to see how a far larger factory operates.

Which Boxes Need Drop & Shake Testing?

Your products are important, and you want your customers to be satisfied when they unbox their delivery. Equally, you want to minimise the time and costs associated with returns or damaged brand reputation. For these reasons, we recommend undertaking some tests to check that all your packaging protects.

While you might pack orders with care, each is one of approximately 13,698,630 that are shipped in the UK every day. The warehouse operatives, pickers, machines and couriers that get them to the intended destination haven’t time to be cautious during handling. They’ve just got to get the job done. Therefore, boxes will get stacked, dropped, knocked and rattled.

Therefore, testing is especially essential if you ship fragile, delicate or expensive items. So, how high is the risk that your goods could break, chip, snap or rip?

Our services include drop and throw tests for measured heights and distances. In addition, we can pack and send your product in your box to you. This enables you to see the delivery through your customers’ eyes. This informs decisions about board thickness, print finish and the use of inserts.
