Cakes on the Box
Are you a fan of the latest Bake Off series? You are not alone! Over 6 million viewers tune in each week to watch the creation of edible delights and disasters. However, we’re not just obsessed with cakes on the box. Cakes are a popular treat, which we’re keen to buy in cafes, shops and farmers markets. What’s more, there’s been a revival in home baking. So, let’s dive into the cake box and indulge our passion in this article.
Which Cake Ticks All the Boxes?
We each have our favourite flavours, with chocolate, lemon, ginger and vanilla being popular choices. However, bakers are getting more experimental with ingredients, so there are always new temptations for our tastebuds.
At the Food & Drink Show in April, a selection of top bakes were submitted for judgment. Every entry was hoping to be voted Britain’s Best Cake 2024, but which ticked all the boxes? A sumptuous salted caramel and almond brownie from Two Magpie’s Bakery. Now, that sounds worth a try, even just to compare it to the cake in your top spot.
Cake Making Business
We’ve heard about the launch of a new apprenticeship, the Growing Bakers programme. The first attendees are learning the full process; farm-grown ingredients, preparation, baking, decorating and customer service. It’s all about upskilling the artisan bakers of the future. However, this isn’t the only route into the industry.
The nation’s love of cakes is the reason why many amateur bakers decide to turn professional and set up a cake business. You might bake stunning occasion cakes to order or undertake batch baking to sell at farmer’s markets and fetes or to supply to local cafés.
In this case, you don’t just need the ingredients and an oven. You also have to consider presentation, packaging and promotion.
Presentation of Bakes
A professional appearance is determined by more than just a fantastic cake, it’s the whole first impression. That might mean investing in cake stands with cloches to cover, cake slices and tongs or serving plates. Many of these items can be sourced from preloved online sites or charity shops. The trick is to pick a style and stick to it. For example, are your target buyers likely to love modern minimalist or traditional afternoon tea crockery?
Buyers like to know prices, so it is good to have these clearly displayed. Mini blackboards are good if your selection changes regularly. Alternatively, parcel tags tied to the top of the cloches work well. Also, show the ingredients or have them at hand, for people who need to ask about allergens.
Cake Boxes & Packaging
Cake boxes make it simple to transport cakes and keep them looking great. As a general rule, white card boxes are the preferred option, as they look clean and fresh. We’ve supplied large cake boxes with integrated handles for the delivery of occasion cakes. In addition, we can make boxes to fit traybakes, cupcakes and slices. Maybe you’d like to discuss postal boxes for online orders?
All of these boxes can be printed with your branding, graphic designs and/or handling instructions. We can also apply a food-safe, 100% recyclable moisture-resistant coating for stickier bakes. Our white cake boxes are plastic-free and you can choose from options including lidded and pizza box styles.

Promoting your Baking Business
How do you get the message out? For a start-up business, a website is a big expense. Therefore, Social Media can be an effective option. Use it to publicise upcoming markets and events, showcase your bakes and create a poll to help you decide what to bake. Equally, use the platform to invite feedback from customers.
A branded banner and tablecloth help to showcase who you are. However, it’s great to give buyers something to take away. This could be a ‘Thank You’ card printed with your contact details. Alternatively, this information can be printed on each cake box!

Are you inspired to grab the recipe book? Whether for business or pleasure, why not get further inspiration from London’s Cake & Bake Show? It runs from 27 November until 1 December and tickets are available on the website. The event promises masterclasses, markets and more!
