Tips on Christmas Gift Packaging

In the last week, we’ve been contacted by a couple of small, independent retailers. They are looking for assistance with designing Christmas Gift Packaging. As they intended to sell stock at Festive Artisan Markets starting in November, there is just enough time to turn things around. However, we started working on Advent Calendar designs and Christmas gift boxes for other customers in January.

If you are actioning last-minute plans for seasonal packaging, we have a few tips for you to consider.

Christmas Gift Packaging To Elevate Your Products

When it comes to Christmas shopping, many consumers have little time to think creatively. So, by presenting your goods in a festive box, you help them to see that this could be the ideal gift for family or friends. Think about the popular Christmas gift boxes, they contain everyday items including shower gel, biscuits and socks. However, their presentation elevates them.

For this reason, the cost of seasonal packaging can usually be offset by the higher price that is charged for a gift range. However, before you place an order for your seasonal retail packaging, consider the following tips:

1. Use Data to Order Sufficient Stock

To keep within your festive budget, use data from previous peak seasons to predict how many gift boxes you need to order. You don’t want to run out, but you also want to avoid the waste and costs of having lots of packaging left at the end of the season.

If you are a startup, with minimal data to draw on, ask other retailers for their advice. You could also ask event organisers how much stock is typically sold at certain events.

2. Design Beautiful Gift Boxes

Beautifully designed gift boxes are ideal to give without needing to wrap. This saves buyers the time and expense of wrapping. Additionally, it aids e-commerce, as buyers can order online and request delivery directly to the recipient. In turn, the recipient still feels as though they have been treated to something special.

Another benefit of beautiful gift boxes is that they are more likely to be reused. The recipient might send a gift in it or use it for storage. Some boxes are printed with templates or design ideas that further encourage reuse.

3. Reduce the Costs of Gift Packaging

Speak to your packaging company about your design goals and seek their advice. They can suggest the most cost-effective print and finish techniques that give you the desired look. To keep packaging costs down, we suggest limiting the colour palette. You’ll be amazed at the wonderful effects that have been achieved with single or two-colour designs.

Also, consider reducing the environmental costs. That means using recycled and widely recycled packaging materials, along with water-based inks and biodegradable finishes.

4. Maintain Brand Consistency on Gift Boxes

Seasonal sales are a time when you can attract new customers. Get the product and service right and they may come back for more. However, you want them to recognise that you were the brand they bought from at Christmas, even when they receive your standard packaging.

Therefore, although seasonal packaging is a chance to step away from the usual branding, you want the style to be relevant and recognisable. Therefore, consider ways to incorporate elements of your logo or usual branding. How can you add a seasonal twist while retaining some level of familiarity?

5. Consider Packaging as Part of your Marketing Plan

The final point is to consider packaging design as part of your wider marketing plan. Where will your festive range be promoted and sold? What is the key message being communicated? Consider how your packaging ties in with the message and ensure it will look great in the various media used in promotional campaigns. For example, will the printed packaging pop against the snowy white or dark starry night backdrop that will be used in advertising?
