What Are the Principles of Packaging Design?

Great design looks good, but it extends far beyond aesthetic appeal. It embraces the purpose and use of the idea and increasingly, the life cycle. As specialists in bespoke cardboard boxes, we work with customers on customised solutions. For every project, we comply with our 8 principles of packaging design.

Our Packaging Design Principles

Fully Understand the Packaging Brief

The first stage is to ensure we fully understand the brief. We’re curious about what the boxes will hold and how they will be packed, shipped and stored. We want to know the priorities, which include temperature control, shock absorbancy, sustainability, attracting attention and telling the brand story. In addition, we want to understand if there have been any issues with previous packaging solutions. It is also helpful to know the budget, so we can keep that in mind when we recommend styles and finishes.

Embrace Creative Thinking & Innovation in Packaging Design

There are many different ways to approach a brief and provide an effective packaging solution and we love to think out of the box. If there is a challenging shape or an issue to be resolved, we will explore a variety of options to see what works best. Fortunately, cardboard is a versatile packaging material and the possibilities are endless! We also keep pace with industry developments and love learning about new materials, technologies and opportunities.

Is the Packaging Design Sustainable?

We consider the lifecycle of the packaging from the offset. For this reason, we favour minimising the range of materials used; sticking to cardboard whenever possible. When other materials are required, we favour renewable, recyclable, or biodegradable options. We proactively advise on ways to reduce packaging volume and encourage reuse, without compromising on quality and protection. Equally, if there is a plastic-free alternative, we let our customers know.

Quality Packaging is a Must

We provide a range of board grades that adhere to or exceed industry standards for corrugated cardboard quality. We’ll recommend the most suitable option for the product and brief and can implement rigorous testing protocols to ensure each design meets strength, stacking, and shipping performance criteria. Equally, we recommend print options to achieve the desired quality finish.

Is the Packaging Efficient to Manufacture?

For every packaging design, we consider the manufacturing process. How viable is it to produce on our machines and what are the potential issues? Manufacturing efficiency is important for reducing the cost, turnaround time and waste generated on each order.  Furthermore, we keep in mind logistics and handling at the design phase to minimise transportation costs and our environmental footprint.

Is the Packaging Design Safe?

This focuses on safe handling and opening. It encompasses, but is not limited to good weight distribution, reducing the risk of breakages or parts piercing the packaging and ease of opening. It also covers printed symbols to inform of correct handling and storage. We ensure that all designs comply with health and safety regulations.

Does the Packaging Have Aesthetic Appeal?

Up until this point, our principles have focused on functionality. However, customisation with branding, graphics, typography and finishing details is vital for attracting the attention of your target buyers. In many cases, the packaging is the first impression that a customer has and this can alter their perception of the product and brand. As such, it’s a valuable marketing tool.

Is the Packaging Design Easy to Use?

Firstly, this considers the packing process. For packing line efficiency, the boxes need to be easy to identify when flat-packed, intuitive to assemble and quick to pack and stack. It must work for any machinery used in the packing process and be easy to handle for shipping. In addition, the boxes must be easy to open by a retailer or customer.
