Metallic Effects for Bespoke Retail Packaging

Looking to make your products stand out on the shelf? A reflective, metallic finish can bring your product packaging to life with eye-grabbing results.

Packaging design with metallic touches adds glamour and intrigue, especially when coupled with a pure white or dark, matt tone. It is a style adopted by many cosmetic, hair care and fragrance brands, typically aimed at the luxury market. How can you achieve a classy metallic look on your retail packaging?

Metallic printing, hot foil blocking and metallic stickers are three options for enhancing packaging with an element of shine. Before we explore these options in greater detail, there are three points to take into consideration.

  1. Metallics are best used in moderation

A subtle approach is advised. Use metallics to define a specific element, be it typography, a brand logo or a beautiful illustration. This element will appear as a normal print in the shade but comes to life as it catches the light. Eyes can’t help but be drawn to this flash of delight.

  1. Metallic finishes work best on flat smooth surfaces

Appropriate surfaces for this finish include carton board or cardboard packaging. Any textured surface may result in a less even and defined finish.

  1. Printed metallics are not restricted to gold, silver, copper and bronze.

Did you know that in 2019, Pantone released 655 metallic shades for use on printed packaging? In all the options we mention in this article, it is possible to select from a wide variety of shades.

What is Foil Blocking on Packaging?

Foil blocking is a high-end finish that offers a unique, slightly debossed (imprinted), reflective finish. This technique is also referred to as foil stamping, as the process uses a heated, shaped die to press the pigmented foil onto the packaging. Any excess foil is brushed away, leaving a permanent, shiny print design on the surface.

Foil blocking is highly durable and offers the most reflective, impactful finish of the three metallic print options. As it is a more costly option, it is typically specified by luxury brands. It is also popular on gift boxes, for exhibitions and product promotions.

There are a few restrictions on the design, which ensure a clear finished result. The thickness of lines should be no less than 0.5mm, so fine fonts are not ideal for foil blocking.

Is Metallic Print Packaging more Budget-friendly than Foil Blocking?

For brands looking for metallic elements without the costs associated with foil blocking, we recommend printing. As with any other ink, metallic print lies flat on the surface for a smooth finish. The result is more of a metallic sheen than a highly reflective shine; this is preferred by many brands.

As the design is printed onto the packaging, metallic inks can be used to create fine details, as well as blocks of reflective colour. Our knowledgeable team are happy to offer advice on the design format and layout for printed packaging.

Adding Metallic Stickers to Packaging

Another means of adding an eye-grabbing detail to your packaging is to use metallic stickers. Those plain boxes can be elevated by applying a small or large sticker. This is often positioned in a highly visible area of the packaging or sits across the seal.

Stickers can be added to a range of different packaging, from envelopes to shipping cartons. Alternatively, a standard box can be used to display a full product range, with stickers providing the point of differentiation. This flexibility offers a cost-effective solution for many small retailers.

If stickers appeal, but you want a consistently professional look, Aylesbury Box Company recommend embossing retail boxes. A raised border helps to position the stickers accurately and adds another dimension to the packaging.
