Can a Change in Packaging Make a Difference?

Can a Change in Packaging Make a Difference?

When environmental initiatives are introduced, it can be difficult to convince people to embrace the change. When you consider the scale of the problem, you might be left wondering ‘What difference is this going to make?’

There was certainly resistance to the idea when a 5p charge for plastic bags was enforced in all retail outlets. It meant we had to remember to take our own bags to the supermarket or pay. This took away a little bit of convenience, which is something we all relish, but has it made a difference?

According to the latest DEFRA report, it certainly has. Data provided by the 7 leading supermarket retailers shows 83% less plastic bags were issued in 2016, than in 2014 – that equates to 6 billion less items of plastic heading for landfill.

On an individual basis, the average person was issued with 140 plastic bags in 2014 and 25 in 2016. That suggests that we can make adjustments that have noticeable environmental benefits.

Retail Packaging goes Full Circle

I used to watch (typically American) films where the leading character would pack their shopping into a paper bag with nostalgia. At the time, this seemed old fashioned. It spoke of a time when you’d go to the butcher for meat, the baker for bread and didn’t have to carry milk home because that was delivered to your door (in recyclable glass bottles).

Now the environmental benefits of paper bags, glass bottles and cardboard boxes have resulted in a resurgence. What’s more, the friendly local store that provides personal service and the convenience of home delivery services are also coming back into vogue.

Demand for Cardboard Packaging

We’ve certainly seen a shift towards cardboard packaging as more retailers are actively improving their green credentials. As cardboard packaging can be cut and shaped in a myriad of ways and printed with an array of colours and finishes, retailers are often surprised at the design possibilities that can be achieved.

The 5p Charge

The DEFRA report also gives some insight into what happens to the 5p you’ve paid when you haven’t had a bag at hand. It states that since the charge was introduced, those 7 retailers have donated £66 million to charitable organisations, the majority of which relate to environmental protection. That really could make quite a difference.
