Custom Packaging for an Innovative Product

We enjoy the challenge of applying our cardboard engineering skills to create bespoke boxes that provide the perfect fit, presentation and protection for a product. When we were approached by the founders of Shirinoku, the Aylesbury Box Company team had a fascinating packaging design project to work on.

Introducing Noku Canvas

Connecting with nature is proven to have many benefits to our health and well-being. As we spend the majority of our time indoors, interior design has focused on bringing the outside in. This concept is known as biophilic design and involves using natural materials, such as wood, stone and cork, along with natural light to enhance work and living spaces.

Another element of biophilic design is introducing plants to our interiors. Houseplants are now a major feature in interior design, but some of us fear killing them off with over-or under-watering.

To enable us to benefit from the calming and air purifying presence of plants, the Shirinoku team developed Noku Canvas. This hexagonal, wall-mounted plant display brings natural art to your walls and incorporates a system to provide a 30-day water supply.

An individual Noku Canvas can work, but multiple units make it possible to create a diverse and interesting plant life display. The product is made from 96% recycled plastic and cork and includes adhesive strips to make it simple to install.

Custom Packaging Design

A unique product like this demands custom packaging. Firstly, to provide a perfect fit, without the need for void fillers, the packaging design needed to include an internal section to the exact dimensions of a Noku Canvas.

The company wanted the packaging to include installation instructions, a mounting template to aid accurate placement of multiple canvases on the wall, branding and a beautiful, linear foliage design. All this was to be achieved in a single black print.

Sustainable Packaging

To stay faithful to this agenda, they were looking for a packaging company with green credentials, that could manufacture an eco packaging solution. As an FSC® certified packaging company, we were able to evidence sustainable practices through our supply chain and in our factory.

What’s more, we specialise in cardboard packaging, made from over 80% recycled fibres and 100% recyclable. It was a partnership that ticked all the boxes!

We printed installation instructions on the inside of the box and the mounting template. The internal hexagonal hold and outer surfaces of the box were printed with the linear design.

The result looks great, yet was achieved at a relatively low cost. It fulfils the packaging brief, providing a perfect fit to present the product beautifully and optimise protection during shipping. From the offset, the brand identity is clear and both the quality of the product and the eco values are reflected in the packaging design.

It is early days for this business, but if they can generate sufficient interest in Noku Canvas, they have ideas for future products that help us to connect with nature. We hope the packaging design will play a part in their success.
