Cardboard Packaging Winners!

Cardboard Packaging Winners!

Aylesbury Box Company would like to congratulate the students at St Benedict’s Catholic High School, who were recent winners of the CPI Paper Works Design Technology Competition for cardboard packaging!

This national competition is an annual event, open to 11-14 year olds in the UK. Each year there are a number of different cardboard packaging briefs for the teams to choose from, all of which offer a realistic business challenge. Students have to understand the specific details of the packaging requirement, along with constraints such as budget limitations, sustainability and transport costs.

This year the winning team worked on a corrugated cardboard plant packaging brief. They had to consider a design that would be sufficiently robust to protect the plants during delivery, yet still look appealing. The boxes had to be branded and environmental issues also had to be considered. The St Benedict’s team created ‘Gorgeousness in a pot’.

Commenting on the winning design, Andy Barnerson, Director of Packaging Affairs at the CPI noted that the innovative packing solution was a design of outstanding quality that offered a practical solution to the brief. He said that the winning design could work well if it were to be adopted by both florists and garden centres.

Get Involved

If you are a teacher of Design Technology, look out for details of next year’s challenge on the Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) website. The project is set up to meet curriculum requirements and cardboard is a cheap, widely available, yet versatile material for students to work with.

We love to encourage as many young people to develop their cardboard engineering skills, to ensure both the boxes and our business are sustainable in the future!
