French artist Olivier Grossetete has been dubbed the ‘cardboard architect’ following a series of large scale construction projects created from cardboard boxes.

The People’s Tower

This year the latest design; ‘The People’s Tower’ will be a focal point of Hull’s Freedom Festival. A construction that will be 10 meters in height once completed will be erected in Queens Gardens between 2nd and 4th September, but work begins off site today, at the Hull School of Art and Design.

His designs are created by teams of volunteers from the community in which the temporary buildings are constructed. Young and old are invited to work side by side to bring the vision to life. There may be professional artist working with Lego fans, retired builders and their grandchildren, all adding their bit to the project. If you live in Hull or are heading up for the Freedom Festival you may also want to get involved.

This isn’t the first ‘People’s Tower’, others have been constructed in such places as Marseille, Sydney and at Glastonbury Festival back in 2013, yet each design is different. At the end of the festival, the building will be knocked down and the boxes recycled, leaving just happy memories for everyone who played their part.

Cardboard Art

Standard sized cardboard boxes are ideal building materials for such a project. They are robust and can be viewed as pixels to create unique designs. If you love getting creative with cardboard, Aylesbury Box Company would love to see the results!
