Corrugated cardboard is a versatile material. With cardboard engineering skills, a good dash of artistic flair and patience, many artists have created wonderful sculptures from this affordable and widely available material.

James Lake Cardboard Artist

Paralympic Sculptures

James Lake has worked on collaborative art projects since 2007 and was selected as one of the artists working on a collaborative multi-media piece for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. His contribution to Gold Run included a large cardboard head and a striking cardboard sculpture of a hurdler at the starting blocks.

Two years later, he created 32 BSL hand sculptures from cardboard, spelling ‘strength’ and ‘equality’; two core values of the Paralympic legacy. These were exhibited at the Queen Elizabeth Park as part of the Liberty Festival.

Cardboard People

The first of James Lake’s cardboard sculptures was a representation of his dad seated in an armchair. He’s also been commissioned to produce a 1920’s style butler and bellboy for the stylish, retro themed Gotham Hotel, which claims to ‘Bring Manhattan to Manchester’.

Cardboard Weather Map

A large installation is now a permanent feature in Exeter’s Met Office. James created an 8ft cardboard UK with 150 interchangeable symbols for the entrance foyer of this building.

Earth Overshoot Day

In 2017, James Lake produced a cardboard globe to highlight the issue of the worlds’ unsustainable demand for resources. In August of 2017, demand for resources exceeded earth’s capacity. At current consumption rates, the world would need to be 1.7 times larger in order to meet demand. Commissioned by Rajapack Packaging, the aim was to show the scale of the problem in a fully sustainable material.

Cardboard Packaging

The core material may be the only connection between James’ sculptures and your packaging material, but his work showcases many of the beneficial properties of cardboard. Robust, versatile, durable, sustainable and affordable, cardboard provides the ideal packaging material.
